Author Interview

ree

Can you walk us through your typical writing day? Do you have any rituals or habits that help you stay productive?

I usually write at my desk, with fountain pens. Most of my books are written by hand before being typed up. I find this process more organic and enjoyable

How do you choose the themes or messages you want to convey in your books?

Koby Takes the helm sees my writing universe change. it's all about what my characters get up to as figments of my imagination, when not being written down. I love Shakespeare, so stories, detail and relationships are a big feature of my writing. The themes can come from anywhere. I'm a teacher and a counselor as well as a writer, so much of what I write about is inspired by real life. My first book was based upon my allotment, my third book was the product of experiences of grief, so a lot of my universe ends up sprinkled in the inky pages of my stories.

How do you develop your characters? Do they evolve organically as the story progresses, or do you plan them in detail beforehand?

My characters grow, with their experiences and interactions with each other. They all exist for a reason, as people we might see around us.

Is there a character in your books that you particularly relate to or have a special connection with?

My favourite character, I have two. Gorbind Phalla and Devan Coultrie. Devan inspired Gorbind and I'd be lost without them.

How do you balance writing for entertainment with exploring deeper, more complex themes?

I think that balance is very tight. I wouldn't want to separate it. I prefer engagement rather than entertainment; good writing, good stories will stay with the readers who invest in stories.

What was the hardest part of writing your latest book?

The hardest part of the most recent book, was knowing that one character was never coming back. Not soon, anyway. I've really enjoyed going to book events and sharing my work there.

How do you deal with criticism, especially when it comes to negative reviews or feedback?

Not a fan of criticism! Is anyone? But I get that my stories won't suit everyone.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers looking to break into the industry?

Writing is hard, the indie market is congested. Be aware that you're not going to be millionaire over night. Pick up a pen, see what happens.

What can your readers expect from you in the near future?

I have a stack of books, stack of stories to write. I would encourage readers to be curious and see what comes up for them.

Thank you for your interview with us today. Where can readers connect with you online or follow your journey?

You can find lots of bits and pieces at horticultural hobbit.com
